Frequently Asked Questions
Installation & Setup
How difficult is installation? Can I do it myself?
Most farmers with basic tools can install in 2-4 hours with 2 people. You'll need: post hole digger (or auger), level, concrete mix, and basic hand tools. Full instructions included. Professional installation available in some areas.
What ground preparation is needed?
The installation area should be relatively level (grade less than 5%). Remove vegetation and debris. For best results, the ground should be firm—avoid areas that stay muddy. Some customers add gravel or crushed rock for all-weather performance.
Which link do I connect the spring to?
The 4th link from the top is the link that hooks onto the little side tooth on each side of the gate. Use attached pictures as a visual reference for clarity.
Durability & Maintenance
What vehicle weight can it handle?
Our standard gates handle vehicles up to 10,000 lbs (loaded pickup trucks, tractors). Heavy-duty models support 20,000+ lbs (semis, loaded grain trucks). The rails flex slightly under weight then return to position—this is normal and by design.
Cost & Value
How much does a ride-over gate cost compared to a traditional gate?
Initial cost is higher ($500-$1,500 vs $200-$400 for a standard gate). However, there's no daily opening/closing, no hinges to maintain, and no gate posts getting hit by equipment. Most customers see ROI within 2-3 years from time savings alone.
Practical Use Questions
Will my ground clearance be an issue?
Low-clearance vehicles (sports cars, some sedans) may scrape. Standard cars and all trucks/SUVs are fine. Rail height is typically 4-6 inches. If you need lower profile for specific vehicles, contact us about custom options.
Comparison Questions
Why not just use a regular gate?
Traditional gates require stopping, opening, driving through, and closing—multiple times daily. They need maintenance (hinges, latches), can blow open in wind, get left open accidentally, and posts get hit by equipment. Ride-over gates eliminate all these issues.
Ordering & Customization
What comes in the box?
Complete gate assembly (rails pre-welded to posts), all mounting hardware, installation instructions, and installation template. You provide: concrete, basic tools, and 2-4 hours of labor.
Vehicle Compatibility
Can pickup trucks or larger vehicles drive over the gate?
Our widest gate is 8 feet, which is about the same width as most pickup trucks - so clearance would be very tight. These gates are designed primarily for ATVs and small jeeps. We wouldn't rule it out, but we wouldn't count on it either.
Can the gate handle both an ATV and a full-size truck?
ATVs pass over easily. Most full-size trucks are too wide for the 8-foot gate, so they aren't a reliable fit for dual use.
How It Works
Does the gate allow travel in both directions, or only one way?
It works both ways - livestock are contained while ATVs or small vehicles can cross in or out freely.
Livestock Compatibility
Are these gates suitable for horses?
Our gates are designed and proven for livestock use, and we don't see a reason they wouldn't work well for horses. That said, we haven't had many horse boarding ranch customers specifically, so we'd recommend confirming your setup dimensions before ordering.
Replacement Parts
Are replacement parts available if something gets damaged?
Each gate has relatively few components: a base, two chains, shackles, and springs. We've sent out replacement chains, shackles, and springs before - availability depends on our inventory. Most of these items can also be found at a local hardware store.
Is the spring a standard size or custom?
The spring is a custom size, so it's not something you'll find off the shelf. We do keep a stock of spare springs and other small parts on hand - if you need extras, reach out and we can supply them directly.
